Should I keep continuing these volumes or share the love and pick up a few other books before getting the same series of archives? Matt IP: Logged |

If you enjoyed the Green Lantern volume, you're probably going to like Flash and Justice League as well -- they're quite similar in style and tone. You seem to be focusing on Silver Age/Julius Schwartz titles; are you a fan of this material in particular? If so, you must get Atom and Hawkman. These two titles start a little later in the Silver Age, when the writers, artists, and editors were firing on all thrusters and knew exactly what they were going for. Dynamic Duo, the first of the Silver Age Batman Archives, is also in this camp. I just finished it yesterday, and thought it was enjoyable too. All of these sets (with the exception of Justice League) are short -- so whatever you decide, you can catch up with the available material quickly. I like as much variety as possible, so I too recommend trying different #1s. - David IP: Logged |

quote: I just started collecting these a few months ago myself, and I found the best strategy is to focus on volume 1's, while picking up second volumes of ones you really enjoy. I've got a couple volume 2's, and even a very few higher numbers (I got Superman 1-3 and later Batman 1-3 each in a cheap lot together on Ebay, and I love the JSA so much that I keep splurging on them and now have up to vol 4, with 5 coming soon). But that's just me. IP: Logged |

Sales always drop from #1 volumes on down, falling more with each successive volume. This suggests that many people sample multiple #1 volumes rather than working their way deep into a series. Of course, it's up to you, but since you asked . . . I say, buck the trend! If you've got a series you know you like, finish that one off as far as it goes, and then turn to something new. For my money, all of the Archive lines are great, so you can't go wrong sampling new lines. But one of the coolest aspects of the Archives is that you get to see so much consecutive material in the longer-running series. If you like SA GL, as you apparently do, finish off his series and then work on one of your other choices. Possibly by the time you've gone on and finished JLA, say, there'll be another SA GL out! And you could always diverge between longer running series by taking a break to read a new #1 in between (GA GL, for instance?). But the bottom line is it really doesn't matter any way. You can't go wrong with any Archive! IP: Logged |

quote: I agree!!! In only 3 months or so I have completely depleated my life savings on Archives, but boy was it worth it!!!!! I've gone the traditional route, getting as many number 1's as I can. When I've gotten a particularly good deal I've moved beyond that (such as with Superman and Batman). There were also a couple of cases where I just couldn't wait and got some more (such as JSA), but in general my plan is get a whole slew of # 1's to sample, and then work out future priorities from there (although I do plan on getting every Archive eventually, but it will probably take me a couple of years to catch up). I guess the point of my story is that in only a few short months I have aquired a large number almost 20 by my count), and while maybe there were some that interested me more than others, I have yet to come across a dud. In fact, I have yet to come across one where I wouldn't buy the next volume. It all goes back to personal priorities. IP: Logged |
